Heritage Wall Artwork

Client: Cheshire East Council | Peveril Securities

Project: Royal Arcade Scheme | Crewe Bus Station Facade

Material: Perforated Aluminium Cladding

Date: 2024

Crewe has a strong industrial story that includes being home to what was once the world’s largest locomotive works, alongside connections to railway & automotive engineering having been home to both Bentley and Rolls Royce.

The town itself was born as a result of this industry and the heritage wall artwork is a celebration of the skilled craftmanship that built both Crewe and its manufacturing history.

A further intention behind the artwork was to create a sense of arrival, reflect Crewe’s brand values and reignite civic pride in a town currently undergoing regeneration.

Following a period of intensive research and stakeholder engagement, five unique designs were presented to the public and stakeholders for feedback.

The final chosen artwork features people of Crewe at work in the industries that helped to shape the town. There is an interplay between the figures, text, pattern and shape inspired by the town’s heritage, signal box lights and railway graphics.

The design is applied to the façade of the West facing elevation of the bus station as perforated aluminium cladding.
